TL;DR · Key takeaways
  • ABDM is India's national digital health framework; ABHA is a patient's 14-digit health ID.
  • HFR registers your facility; HPR registers you as a healthcare professional.
  • ABDM is currently voluntary, but registration brings visibility and future-proofs your clinic.
  • ABDM-native software handles ABHA linking and consent flows without third-party add-ons.

ABDM, ABHA, HFR, HPR — the acronyms pile up fast. This guide explains what each one means for a working clinic in plain language, whether you have to act now, and how the right software makes compliance a non-event.

What is ABDM?

ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission) is India's national framework for digital health, run by the National Health Authority. Its goal is to connect patients, doctors, and facilities through interoperable digital health records, so a patient's history can follow them across providers with their consent.

What is ABHA?

ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) is a unique 14-digit health ID for each patient. When a patient's records are linked to their ABHA, they can be shared securely between providers with consent — which means a child vaccinated at your clinic in Hyderabad can have that history available if the family moves to another city.

What are HFR and HPR?

HFR (Health Facility Registry) is the national registry of clinics and hospitals, and HPR (Healthcare Professional Registry) is the registry of verified doctors and other professionals. Registering your facility in HFR and yourself in HPR is how you become a recognised participant in the ABDM ecosystem.

Is ABDM mandatory for clinics?

ABDM is currently voluntary, not mandatory, for private clinics. However, registering early brings real benefits — visibility in the national facility registry, readiness for any future requirements, and the ability to offer patients linked, portable records today.

How do clinics stay ABDM-compliant?

The simplest path is to use ABDM-native software that handles HFR/HPR registration support, ABHA linking, and consent flows for you. When this is built in rather than bolted on, compliance becomes part of normal record-keeping instead of a separate project.

ABDM-native, not bolted on

Aira Nexus Clinic is ABDM-native — HFR and HPR integrated, with ABHA-linked patient records and NHA-spec consent flows built in, plus DPDP-aligned data hosting in AWS Mumbai.
